Downtown Raleigh

North Carolina

Oh dear…where to begin?

This place is crazy awesome! I was there on a weekday but there was still a lot of life through this area. It’s definitely well lit and much attention was paid to detail in creating an experience wherever you go. There is a great view from the Capitol building straight down to the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium. Which by the way, used an ingenious glass box to expand without taking away from the original structure.

I encourage you to explore a little bit and find the cobblestone road. Unfortunately, my exploration was cut short due to the lack of daylight and the need for an early rise the next day.

From what I saw and experienced…Raleigh you get 9/10

and as a bonus! What a clean City!10/10

My Day Without Shoes

This doesn’t really flow with my theme…nevertheless I feel like it’s important to get this out there.

Today was One Day Without Shoes, a day sponsored by TOMS that raises awareness about the 40% of people around the world who do not have a basic necessity that the majority of us in America have a surplus of. Going in to today I thought that it would be a piece of cake. I mean I hate shoes to begin with; they suffocate my feet. How mistaken I was. I have had few experiences that have provided me with so much pain. Not physical pain but emotional. Of course my feet are extremely sore but what hurts worse is knowing that there are people, especially young children, who go without shoes everyday.

I can’t imagine what it’s like to constantly have cuts, sores, and infections destroying the only mode of transportation I have. Yet there are people in this world who have a surplus of this necessity, myself included, and don’t even think twice about getting another pair. How privileged we are…

This day has also brought to light an issue that we have here in America. We’ve all heard the phrase No Shirt. No Shoes. No Service. But do you really understand what that means? It means that the homeless person that doesn’t have shoes can’t use the little change he does have to get something to eat. Without shoes in America you can’t even sustain yourself.

Overall my experience has been more than humbling. And so, I challenge you! For one day just try it. Pick a day, any day and go without shoes. We’ve heard that if you really want to understand what someone is going through, “Put yourself in their shoes.” But what do you do when they don’t have shoes?

Take them off and experience, truly experience what it’s like to live one day without shoes.

Away…

I’ve been away from all Social Networking Sites because of Lent…BUT I am back! And I have a lot to say, so be on the look out to hear from me soon!

If you are ever in The City of Seven Hills and you want a peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle, Ault Park is where you need to go. After a long day of exploring Cincinnati, it was a beautiful thing to come to a place where your mind could go free. Observatory Avenue will lead you straight to the core of the nearly 224 acre park.

Upon arrival, I not only found my self immediately beginning to relax but also enjoying the small things in life. A breath of crisp Autumn air filled my lungs with happiness. The small murmurs of the flowing water sang soft melodies.

A woman and her fun loving dog were getting their picture taken near the central water feature. A family, on the other side of the pavilion were all clad in black button downs and jeans for a picture that they will remember forever. However, what really caught my attention was the stretch limousine that chauffeured the Bride and Groom. Surely this spot had some significance to them. To me, the large expanse of greenery begged for the imprints of shoes. Guys, show your girl your soft side, have an evening picnic during Autumn, the colored leaves will only had to her natural beauty. Ladies, surprise your guy, gather his friends and head out to Ault Park for a game of football, wiffle ball, or Frisbee.

10/10

If I could describe these guys reasonably well, I would. However, they are just so freaking amazing that there is no way that I could. So check them out. Listen and love every minute of it. The real magic happens when you watch them live, though! there isn’t a scale that goes high enough to rate them…

The Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, is quite an interesting bit of architecture. CAC is Zaha Hadid’s first built project here in the United States, construction being completed in 2003. Hadid is noted with another first, the CAC is the first major project to go up in the declining downtown. Upon entering the center you will notice that the sidewalk becomes the “urban carpet” of the interior space and extends into a wall. If you have young children, don’t be afraid to take them along, they’ll enjoy running up the curvature that creates continuity from  the floor to wall.  Be sure to take a look at the stair leading to the lower level as well. It is interesting to say the least but I ‘ll leave the rest as a surprise. I would put this on your list of places to visit, hands down. 9.7/10
